RIP Childhood Friends…

Sorry to hit you guys with another sad journal, but more sadness has invaded my world. At least this time it’s nothing direct. Two actors I’ve loved since childhood have died. If you guys have noticed, two of my all-time television shows are Doctor Who and Are you being served? When my family moved to North Carolina from Utah in the early 1980s, we moved into a house deep in the country and had major culture shock. My brothers and I found solace in watching PBS. Every night at 6pm was Doctor Who time. The theme is ingrained in me, I loved watching the beginning more than the show itself. I was 8yo, so I couldn’t always follow the stories, but I loved the Doctor, K9, and Sarah Jane Smith. When I finally got into the new Who, one of the first episodes I watched was School Reunion. I was just as excited to see Sarah Jane as the Doctor was! It totally bridged the gap from my childhood memory of the show and accepting the new show (complete with K9!) Well, yesterday, Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith, lost her life to cancer. She was only 63. My mom is 64, so I know that’s WAY too young to go. The news is so sad for me, and for everyone else who loves Doctor Who. She was the best companion hands down. David Tennant may have surpassed Tom Baker as my favorite Doctor, but as fun as Ten’s companions are they aren’t Sarah Jane.

A short while after learning of Elisabeth Sladen’s death, I learned that Trevor Bannister had died April 14th of heart failure. He played Mr Lucas on Are you being served? I liked Mr Lucas even though he was a bit naughty. I watch the show every week still, and know the order of the shows. No matter how many times I watch it, I never get tired of it. However, without fail, even though I watch them, I don’t find the shows after Mr Lucas leaves as endearing as the ones he’s on. Part of that is I never warmed up to his replacement Mike Berry. Trevor Bannister was also on an episode of Keeping Up Appearances (Angel Gabriel Blue) that is easily one of my favorites. Very sad to hear he’s gone. I think that leaves only Frank Thornton.

I’m ok, but a little bit shaken

I went through the North Carolina storms Saturday. I knew it was going to be bad, but it could have been a lot worse than it was in my town. My family and I were set to jump in the tub and cover ourselves with a mattress. Just before the storm hit, the sky turned green and the clouds looked angry. We kept one eye outside and the other on the weather report. I locked all the storm windows and we pulled all we could away from the windows. As soon as hail began, we unplugged everything and held our breath. Then…nothing. The sky lightened up and the rain and hail stopped. We went outside to see the sky clearer. I picked up a piece of hail and was surprised just how large and strange it was. It wasn’t round, it was spiky and the size of a golf ball. Aside from some rolling dark clouds, gusty wind, and downpours, nothing threatening happened again. Then the sun came out! It was over.

We were the lucky ones. Many people died. My brother-in-law’s father died that day, but I don’t know if it had anything to do with the weather or not. The storms were so wide-spread they affected everyone I know that lives in the state. The worst was my brother’s son’s school lost it’s roof. Luckily, none I know lost their homes.

I’ve been affected by the shock of it all. Prior to the storm I was shaking violently, and afterwards I’ve been weepy. Yes, my family and home are safe and sound, but it was the first time I actually thought we’d be in quite a different situation.

Finally got around to taking some decent photos of my stuff. I’m entering these into a Nerds in Babeland geek art show. One is a version of Sackboy from Little Big Planet that a friend commissioned me to do for his girlfriend , one is a set of dolls I did for fun of Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett cos I love the film, and one is my sweet little zombie. They’ve already accepted the zombie, and I just sent in the other two :)
